Jefferson County is fortunate to have a regional Incident Management Team (IMT). This type of team is relatively rare in the United States because it is a local, multi-jurisdictional group that trains together quarterly. The team is comprised of 110 people from 20 different agencies in and around the county, including fire departments, forest service and land management agencies, the Sheriff’s Office and other local police departments. The Jeffco IMT was the first Colorado Type III Team to be certified as an all-risk team.

When a local fire department or police agency is overwhelmed by a large-scale incident, the Incident Management Team can bring organization and support. The IMT was established in 1992 and geared strictly toward handling wildfires. After the Hi-Meadow fire of 2000, the team reorganized and now trains for response to a multitude of disasters, including those involving mass casualties, urban search and rescue situations and weapons of mass destruction.

The Jeffco IMT has been activated seventeen times in the last sixteen years to manage wildfires and other incidents.  These callouts include assistance to the US and Colorado state forest services, as well as Park, Douglas, and Clear Creek counties.  It has also sent several members to assist with the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005.  This large foundation of experience helps the team manage any type of disaster.

In November of 2009 the Jeffco IMT received the FEMA Region 8 Partners in Preparedness Award. Our understanding is that only 7 of these awards have been given out.
